Material field guide / Vinyl

Vinyl, without the showroom fog.

The modern vinyl conversation starts with LVT and rigid-core SPC: resilient surfaces, purposeful visuals, and specifications worth reading before you fall for a sample board.

LVT is the surface story. SPC is the structure story.

Luxury vinyl tile and plank (LVT/LVP) describe the format and visual layer. SPC—stone polymer composite—is a rigid-core construction often used in click-lock products. Neither label replaces the need to evaluate the complete product.

LVT / LVP
Vinyl flooring made to deliver tile or plank visuals. The wear layer protects the printed design beneath it.
SPC core
A rigid composite core. It is one part of a flooring system, alongside the locking profile, backing, finish, and subfloor requirements.
Read the spec
Compare wear layer, total construction, approved installation conditions, and warranty terms—not just the word “waterproof.”

Field note: Water resistance at the surface does not make subfloor preparation or moisture testing optional.

A smarter way to shop vinyl.

Begin with the real decision: whether this material suits the life happening in the room.

Three questions worth carrying into every showroom.

  1. 01

    What protects the visual?

Ask for the wear-layer specification and how it matches the traffic in your room.

    Understand wear layers
  2. 02

    What is below the plank?

A rigid core may help a product feel substantial, but it cannot compensate for an unsuitable or unprepared subfloor.

    Build a project checklist
  3. 03

    What does the room demand?

Water, sunlight, pets, traffic, transitions, and cleaning habits should all shape the final shortlist.
