Beautiful material on a bad subfloor is still a bad floor. Prep, moisture numbers, transitions, and who does the work matter more than the marketing photo on the box.
The job site standard
The product is only half the system.
Every flooring warranty assumes a prepared substrate, correct acclimation, approved underlayment, and install methods that match the product. Skip those and the floor is guessing.
- Subfloor prep
- Flatness, soundness, cleanliness, and level tolerances. Most “floor problems” start here.
- Moisture testing
- Concrete RH or calcium chloride, wood moisture content, and documented readings—not vibes.
- Scope & transitions
- Who removes the old floor, who moves appliances, and how rooms meet. Hidden costs live in the scope.
Field note: The cheapest bid often omits prep. Ask what is excluded before you celebrate the number.
