Cupping, crowning, swollen edges, and failed locks almost always track back to water—above or below the floor. Test, document, and design for moisture before you fall for a waterproof slogan.
The risk standard
Waterproof surface ≠ dry building assembly.
Rigid-core vinyl can shrug off spills while a wet slab still ruins the install below. Hardwood and laminate fail differently—but moisture is the common plot.
Concrete moisture
RH probes and calcium chloride tests quantify vapor emission. Guessing is not a method.
Wood moisture content
Subfloor and flooring MC must be in range and acclimated to the job site.
Failure modes
Cupping, crowning, peaking, mold, adhesive failure—each points to a moisture story.
Field note: If a leak or slab issue is active, stop install. Covering moisture is how small problems become full tear-outs.
