Wood subfloor needs to sit between 6% and 12% moisture content, and within 2–4 points of the hardwood you’re about to install. That’s the range that keeps movement predictable. Outside it and you’re gambling.

Over a wood subfloor in a normal conditioned space, usually no full vapor barrier. You want the assembly to breathe a little. A moisture-retarder underlayment or the paper that comes with some nail-down systems is often enough. Over concrete or above an unconditioned crawl, yes—you need the right retarder rated for the conditions.

I’ve seen guys roll 6-mil poly over plywood “just to be safe” and trap residual moisture that had nowhere to go. Floor smelled like a damp basement by spring. Follow the hardwood manufacturer’s instructions and the NWFA guidelines. If the job is glue-down engineered, the adhesive system often serves as the barrier.   2. Moisture test and document.
