Record sunlight, rolling loads, pets, entrances, wet zones, transitions and the substrate. Then eliminate products whose instructions do not cover those conditions. - 03

LVT, LVP and SPC are related—not interchangeable
Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) describe resilient products built in tile or plank formats. Rigid-core products add a stiffer core; the Resilient Floor Covering Institute identifies SPC and WPC as two rigid-core constructions.
The acronym is only the beginning. Two SPC floors can differ in joint design, surface finish, dimensional behavior, backing and installation limits. Compare the named product and its current documentation, not a generic material reputation.
- Verify whether the product is floating, glue-down or approved for more than one method.
- Check room-size limits, expansion details and transition requirements.
- Ask whether matching stair parts and repair planks will remain available.

Wear-layer shorthand needs context
A wear-layer figure describes only one layer. It does not independently predict scratch appearance, joint strength, dimensional stability or how a finish reacts to grit, rolling chairs and direct sun.
Use the figure to compare like-for-like products, then inspect the surface specification, commercial-use language, test claims and exclusions. A written warranty is useful mainly as a map of conditions the manufacturer expects you to control.
- Take a full plank home; a small chip hides pattern repetition and edge treatment.
- View it in morning, midday and evening light.
- Test ordinary soil and the manufacturer-approved cleaner on the sample.

Installation risk begins below the product
A rigid plank can bridge tiny texture, but it cannot make an unsuitable substrate suitable. Flatness, dryness, cleanliness, soundness and movement still govern the installation.
For concrete, use the moisture-test method and limits named by the flooring and adhesive manufacturers. ASTM F2170 covers in-situ relative-humidity testing in concrete slabs; it is not a universal pass/fail number for every product.
- Put substrate correction, moisture mitigation and floor prep in the written scope.
- Confirm who records test locations and results.
- Do not allow “waterproof floor” to be used as a reason to skip moisture evaluation.

Surface claims get mistaken for permission to ignore leaks, slab vapor, wet walls or water trapped below a floating floor.

One headline number is treated as proof of quality while the joint, finish, room limits and exclusions go unread.

Questions worth asking plainly.
Is SPC the same as LVP?
No. LVP describes a vinyl plank format. RFCI uses SPC for solid polymer core; sellers also use stone-polymer or stone-plastic composite language for products in this rigid-core family. Verify the exact construction.
Is a thicker plank automatically better?
No. Thickness may affect feel or installation details, but it does not replace evaluation of the wear surface, joint, backing, dimensional performance and room fit.
What should I ask a retailer to print?
The product data sheet, installation instructions, warranty, maintenance guide and any third-party certification listing for the exact SKU.
