Cork: surface, construction and finish

Cork’s cellular structure can feel resilient underfoot, but flooring products vary: glue-down tiles and floating planks have different cores, seams, moisture exposure and refinishing possibilities.

Inspect edge construction and finish. Ask whether the floor needs an additional site-applied coat, how rolling loads are handled, and what happens when one tile or plank is damaged.

  • Use full-size samples under furniture feet and ordinary room light.
  • Confirm wet-area and below-grade limits.
  • Get the approved cleaning and recoating procedure in writing.

Bamboo: a product family, not a species grade

Bamboo flooring can be laminated in different orientations or manufactured into strand-woven constructions. Density, finish, milling, binders and moisture behavior vary by product.

Avoid using a generic hardness number as a complete quality score. Surface finish, indentation behavior, edge milling, acclimation instructions and site conditions still matter.

  • Ask for construction and finish details, not only the word “strand.”
  • Review color-change expectations in sunlight.
  • Check repair and refinishing guidance for the exact surface.

Make environmental claims verifiable

A strong sustainability claim names what was measured, by whom, for which product and under what standard. Material renewability alone does not answer emissions, manufacturing, transport, service life or end-of-life questions.

For products containing regulated composite wood, review U.S. TSCA Title VI information. For indoor-air claims, look for a current, checkable third-party certification listing rather than a logo used without a product record.

  • Request chain-of-custody or sourcing evidence if it affects your decision.
  • Verify certification against the certifier’s database.
  • Prefer precise claims over broad “eco-friendly” language.

Does “natural” mean low-emitting?

No. Evaluate the complete flooring system—including core, binders, finish and adhesive—and verify specific third-party claims.
