Floor Slab Sweating

Q: My husband and I are looking at a home to remodel, but we have been told that the slab floor sweats. Is this a problem we can fix?

A: All concrete slabs will naturally sweat some. Usually it is so minimal that is the amount of water vapor escaping a slab is never noticed; however, in some cases you will be able to see the amount of moisture, which typically means there is a problem in the sealing of the slab.
Typically you can solve this problem by cleaning the concrete, ensuring it is dry, then sealing it with a proper concrete sealer. From here you should be safe to install flooring over it, but if you are concerned you can wait a bit and make sure the seal has held true.
