Creaking in Laminate Floor

Creaking in Laminate Floor — modern flooring photography

Q: I installed laminate flooring throughout my first floor and spots of my floor creak. I put the padding and followed all the steps. The floor is made by Dupont flooring. What is the quick fix to rectify this problem?
Thanks, Jim

A: My guess here is that there is a small valley or low spot in the hall which was not detected with the tile. Due to this difference in height the floor is moving a bit more than intended, which is causing the noise. The only other reason why this could be occurring would be if there was not enough of an expansion gap left, and the floor had expanded slightly, causing an almost invisible buckle to the floor which then is noisy when walked over. Its unlikely the expansion gap is your problem if everything was installed up to spec.
As far as a fix is concerned, you would want to pull up the planks in that hall and check the level of the tile. If there is a slope or valley in the tile along the hall, you will want to level it out (a self leveling compound would do) the reinstall the planks after the leveler has cured.
