What Floor is Best for My Project?

Using Laminate as Decking – Can this work?

Using Laminate as Decking – Can this work? — modern flooring photography

Q: We winter in Mesa, AZ and are building a deck. We have been told the laminate flooring will withstand the heat in the summer and can be used. What is your opinion on this?
Our deck is covered but not sure what the monsoon winds blow in.
Thanks,
Betty

A: General rule here is to not use a flooring product as decking. Wood flooring is manufactured and finished in a way that is suited for an entirely indoor and climate controlled environment. Under these constraints and with proper maintenance flooring can last for several years, but as soon as your throw mother nature into the mix you toss those thoughts of longevity right out the window.
The problem you will run into with trying to use laminate in this project is that should any water make it into the core of the laminate then it will begin to swell, warp and many other not so attractive looking things for flooring.
In this case I would look into a decking product. There are many manufacturers of tongue and groove decking which is made from treated lumber built to take the abuse mother nature can dish out. Vifah makes a very nice snap together decking that is very easy to install and has a great look to it.
