Glue Down Installation over OSB

Glue Down Installation over OSB — modern flooring photography

Angela V. over in our store in Tempe, AZ received this question from a customer and forwarded it my way for a bit of help.
Q: What do I need to do in order to glue down a floor to an OSB subfloor?
A: The safe answer to gluing down over OSB would be “don’t,” but it can be done under certain circumstances. If, and only if, the OSB being used is PS2 rated (a more expensive OSB with better moisture ratings) and it has been installed with the sealed side down you can glue over it. Adhesive will not bond properly to the sealed side of OSB, so if the sealed side is facing up it’s a no go.
Now, the professional and far better way to do a glue down over OSB would be to nail or screw down 3/8” plywood over the OSB as an underlay of forms, then glue the floor to the plywood. The reason you do this is should the flooring ever need to be removed, you will remove the plywood and not the OSB. Due to OSB’s construction, think strand woven bamboo, you have essentially large flakes of wood, rather than full sheets of cross ply like plywood. If a floor is glued to OSB, you run risk of pulling the top layers of the OSB apart when you remove the floor.
End result here, if the floor can be nailed, nail it down. Otherwise, screw some 3/8” plywood down over it and glue to the plywood underlay.
